Her efforts have led to three individuals getting their life sentences commuted. The first high profile case that she took on, and met with President Donald Trump to discuss granting a pardon to, was the case of Alice Marie Johnson, who received 21 years for a first-time nonviolent drug offense. That meeting with the president was pivotal in getting Ms. Johnson pardoned.
Her most recent breakthrough was advocating on the behalf of Cyntoia Brown to be released from prison. Kim Kardashian asked Governor Bill Haslam of Tennessee to review her case and consider granting her clemency. Cyntoia Brown was a poor black teenage girl with no family support, under the control of a vicious pimp, and was caught up in the horrors of sex trafficking. At the age of 16 she was convicted for killing her rapist. She had inadequate representation during her trial and ultimately, experienced a miscarriage of justice that changed the course of her life. She served 15 years of a life sentence before being granted clemency.
Kim Kardashian’s efforts were not in vain. Cyntoia Brown will be released on August 7,2019 on parole supervision. Kim Kardashian, an unlikely shero for prison reform, is changing lives one release at a time. And in recent news on June 13, 2019, Kim Kardashian spoke in the East Wing of the White House about what sparked her passion to involve herself in the workings of criminal justice reform. In response she said, “My whole journey with criminal justice reform started about a year ago when I came to meet the President… I plead the case of Alice Johnson who the President gave clemency to and after that I really spent so much time going to different prisons cause I really had no connection to anybody on the inside and really just felt like for me, I’m just at the place in my life where I wanted to make a difference and just wanted to do the right thing…”
She also announced a new partnership with Lyft that will provide ride share credits to formally incarcerated people when they come home. Like I said before, you are never too old and it is never too late to make a difference in the world in which we live.
